The Golden Circle
The South Shore of Iceland
Hveravellir Geothermal Area
This tour is a quick introduction to south and west Iceland with a glimpse of the highlands and north. We visit the pearls of south Iceland: geysers, waterfalls, black sandy beaches and then cross the highlands to the north via Kjolur highland route with a stop at the Hveravellir hot springs with a possibility for a soak in a natural geothermal pool. We conclude this circle route of the south and west of Iceland by exploring the magical Snaefellsnes peninsula.
5 Day South, Kjölur & Snæfellsnes Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival - Keflavik-Reykjavik
Pick up the rental car at Keflavik international airport upon arrival and drive to Reykjavik where you stay the first night.
Day 2: Reykjavik-South Shore
Explore the south coast of Iceland. Some of the highlights along the way: the waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss; views of Eyjafjallajökull and Myrdalsjökull glaciers; the Reynisfjara black san beach; Dyrhólaey; the village of Vik with its black sandy beach stretching as far as the eye can see and impressive views of the Reynisdrangar stacks rising out of the ocean; charming coastal villages of South Iceland.
Accommodation in country hotel in the area of Selfoss.
Day 3: Selfoss-Thingvellir-Geysir-Gullfos-Kjolur/Hveravellir
Drive to Lake Thingvallavatn with views of the steamy slopes of Mt Hengill. Visit the Thingvellir national park – the site of the old parliament and place of great geological interest. At the Geyser area we wait for most active geyser named Strokkur as it spouts impressively every 5-10 minutes. Another pearl in the nature is the breathtaking Gullfoss waterfall (the Golden Falls). The Kjolur highland route will give us the experience of the highlands driving between the Langjokull and Hofsjokull glaciers. At Hveravellir geothermal area with a natural pool there is a chance to take a dip in its geothermal waters or take a stroll around the hot springs in this desert oasis. The day ends in the area of Miðfjorður.
Accommodation in a country hotel.
Day 4: Laugarbakki-Snaefellsnes-Reykjavik
Travelling back south it is time for a detour to the Snaefellsnes peninsula which we can refer to as »Iceland in miniature«; practically all natural phenomena that exist all around Iceland can be found on the peninsula – only on a rather smaller scale! There are volcanic mountains and craters, lava fields, a glacier, waterfalls, sandy beaches, columnar basalt formations, bird cliffs, etc. Snaefellsnes peninsula is also the only area in Iceland where mineral water springs can be found. The day ends in Reykjavik for the last overnight stay.
Day 5: Reykjavik-Keflavik - Departure
Drive to Keflavik airport in time for your international flight where you drop off your rental car. If departing in the afteroon or evening you have a possibility for a visit to the Blue lagoon (admission needs to be pre-booked).
