10 Day Ireland Top to Toe Itinerary

Day 1: Dublin to Derry

Leave Dublin this morning and make your way to the city of Derry in Northern Ireland where you will spend the night. Take the route through Belfast to avoid retracing your steps in a couple of days. Stop in Belfast and tour Titanic Belfast if you are not too tired. Give yourself some time to explore Derry by foot this evening. Overnight in Maldron Hotel Derry

Day 2: Malin Head

Set off at a reasonably early hour this morning to circle Ireland's far north at Malin head. The tip of the Inishowen Peninsula is mainland Ireland’s farthest northerly point. The wild Atlantic has carved deep crevices into the rugged headland, like Hell’s Hole – a dramatic long, deep and narrow chasm where the swells roar and churn. Birds flock here, blown in on the Atlantic winds: regular visitors from Iceland, Greenland and North America; and rarer exotic creatures from further afield. You can take a 45-minute bike ride to stretch your legs in the fresh sea air, and learn about the area’s wildlife, geology and history. Overnight in Maldron Hotel Derry

Day 3: Ulster American Folk Park & Castle Stay

Say goodbye to Derry and Northern Ireland for now as you cross the border into Cavan, but not before you stop off at the Ulster American Folk Park. Immerse yourself in the world famous story of Irish emigration at the museum that brings it to life. Follow the emigrant trail as you journey from the thatched cottages of Ulster, on board a full scale emigrant sailing ship leading to the log cabins of the American Frontier. Meet an array of costumed characters on your way with traditional crafts to show, tales to tell and food to share. You castle tonight has beautifully manicured lawns and parkland so it might be nice to relax here for the evening. Overnight in Cabra Castle Hotel

Day 4: Drogheda & Newgrange

Today you will do some local touring. First up is Trim Castle, a Norman castle built in the 12th Century. Next is the Hill of Tara, best known as the seat of the High Kings of Ireland. Not far away, Newgrange is best known for the illumination of its passage and chamber by the winter solstice sun. You may also wish to visit Drogheda and the Battle of the Boyne Centre commemorating the largest battle to ever take place in Ireland. At stake were the British throne, French dominance in Europe and Religious power in Ireland. Return to your hotel when you are ready. Overnight in Cabra Castle Hotel

Day 5: Kilbeggan Distillery & Athlone

Take a well deserved lie-in this morning before you leave your castle hotel for the heart of Ireland. On your way to Athlone, stop off and take a tour of Ireland's oldest distillery in Kilbeggan. From the creaking timber water wheel, to the giant steam engine you will be transported back two centuries. But then, you will hear, see, smell and taste Ireland’s oldest distillery still producing their world famous Kilbeggan whiskey. Arrive in Athlone in time for a late lunch and spend the evening shopping or visit Athlone Castle and take a walk along the river. End the evening in Ireland's oldest pub, Sean's Bar. Overnight in Sheraton Hotel Athlone

Day 6: Clonmacnoise & Rock of Cashel

Leave Athlone again this morning following a short stay. A little drive outside of Athlone you will get to Clonmacnoise, an early Christian site founded in the mid-6th century. The long and varied history of Clonmacnoise is recounted in an audiovisual presentation shown in the visitor centre. You may wish to stop at Birr Castle on the way to the Rock of Cashel. One of Ireland’s most visited sites, the Rock of Cashel is a spectacular collection of medieval buildings set on an outcrop of limestone in the Golden Vale. Make the final short leg of your trip to your hotel. Overnight in Hotel Minella

Day 7: Cork City & Cobh

Leave your hotel this morning for West Cork via Cork City and Cobh. Just outside Cork you will find and kiss the famous Blarney Stone in order to receive the "Gift of Eloquence". If that is not your thing, move to Cobh - the last port of call for the ill-fated Titanic. This is where the last 123 passengers boarded the supposedly unsinkable luxury liner and there are some great tours you can take including Titanic Experience and a wonderful walking tour. Cobh was also the point of emigration for millions dreaming of a better life during and after the Great Famine. In Cork city, visit the English Market and stroll around the Cork city before you continue out west to your hotel. Overnight in Casey's of Baltimore

Day 8: Mizen Head

Take a scenic drive around West Cork, venture out on Mizen Head to Ireland's most southerly point. At the end of the Mizen Peninsula, the cliffs of Mizen Head rise high above the Atlantic Ocean, where the currents meet from the west and south coasts and waves from the mid-Atlantic crash into the land. Dare to cross the iconic Bridge high above the gorge; watch for seals and their pups in the swell below. The Beara Peninsula is also especially pretty if you are in the mood for more driving. Overnight in Casey's of Baltimore

Day 9: Kinsale & Adare

Make your way from the wilderness of west Cork up to Adare where you will spend your last night in Ireland. Adare is a beautiful little village and a nice place to relax. Find a nice pub for a few relaxing drinks before bed. If you are not satisfied with relaxing, you can spend the evening in nearby Limerick city. Overnight in Fitzgerald's Woodlands House Hotel

Day 10: Return Home

Make your way from your hotel to Shannon Airport where you will return your rental car and fly home.
