12 Day Love at First Bite Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrival and Explore Venice

Welcome to Venice and the start of your Italian adventure! Upon your arrival this morning, you will be taking a private water taxi from the airport to your city center hotel. Spend the day getting acquainted with this seemingly "floating city" by exploring on your own. See St. Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace where you can take a self-guided tour. Cross the Rialto bridge, the oldest of the four bridges spanning The Grand Canal and discover the art of glass blowing. This evening you will discover your love for Italian cuisine by taking a food and wine tour. Your guide will take you to some of their favorite local osteries where you'll sample cicchetti (Venetian ‘tapas’ including calamari, salami, grilled polenta and more). It’ll be love at first bite! You'll learn about the dishes you're eating and also enjoy complimentary drinks, like locally-made prosecco on tap, wine, and Venice's favorite aperitif: the Spritz.

Day 2 - Explore Venice

Fall in love with your amore all over again as you enjoy a romantic gondola serenade through the winding canals of Venice. You will have ample time this afternoon to visit any of the main sites that you were not able to fit in yesterday. Tonight is the perfect night to indulge in an authentic and romantic Italian dinner. Be sure to sample the desert created by the Venetians themselves: Tiramisu.

Day 3 - Verona

Before departing for your tour of the Veneto region this morning, be sure to try a traditional espresso to kick start your day. Italians are serious about their coffee, so you can be too! Order at the bar and strike up a quick conversation with the barista before heading out for your tour. Verona, known as the city of romance is mostly known for being where one of Shakespeare’s greatest works Romeo & Juliet took place. You will have the chance to explore “Casa di Giulietta” or Juliet’s house and even stand on the balcony that inspired Shakespeare. Leave a love letter in the entrance way before exploring the rest of the city. Lunch will be held at a countryside hamlet to sample local dishes before spending the afternoon in the historic town of Sirmione and take a boat tour across Lake Garda. Once you arrive back in Venice, take the evening to relax and prepare for your journey to the culinary heart of Italy tomorrow.

Day 4 - Venice to Bologna

Say "arrivederci" to Venice this morning as you board your train to Bologna. Welcome to Emilia-Romagna: the culinary heart of Italy. Bologna is the capital of Emilia-Romagna and is also known as “the fat city.” Bologna is famous for its indulgent cuisine and recipes and for the next few days you’ll get to witness that first hand. Bologna is a foodie hub of the world and anywhere you choose to eat throughout the city has mouth-watering qualities. Besides the food, Bologna is a lively city with much to do. Spend the afternoon exploring sites like the two towers with the shorter of the two, Garisenda, leaning more dramatically than the more famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. There is also the best university you can visit - not the University of Bologna, though it is a great school - we’re talking about the Carpigiani Gelato University, where you can take professional courses in making (and eating) gelato!

Day 5 - Food Tour

Emilia-Romagna is known for a few of Italy’s staple foods like Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese, aceto balsamico tradizionale di Modena (balsamic vinegar) and prosciutto di Parma. On the tour you are taking today, you’ll experience all of these and more. You’ll visit boutique producers of prosciutto, Parmesan cheese, balsamic vinegar, and wine, and savor different samples of food and wine along the way. After you’ve worked up an appetite at each producer’s grounds, you’ll head over to a family-run restaurant for a 6-course Italian lunch, including house-made pasta and local wines. Spend your night exploring the last of Bologna before heading to Florence in the morning.

Day 6 - Bologna to Florence

Today you will be making your way south to Florence, via train. Travel time is just under 45 minutes. This bustling city is home to many tourist destinations that you’ll definitely want to experience. Revel in the beauty of Piazza del Duomo; the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Brunelleschi's Cupola, the Baptistery of San Giovanni and Giotto's bell tower can all be found here. Cross over the Ponte Vecchio to get to the Oltrarno, or the "other side" of the Arno River. From here, make your way up to Piazzale Michelangelo - a square with panoramic views of the city. Enjoy the tunes of local street musicians while admiring some of the best views Florence has to offer with your “amore” by your side. In the evening you’ll be taking a cooking class to learn how Florentines cook their famous dish of Bistecca alla Fiorentina. Whilst many food and wine products are exported around the world, the Bistecca alla Fiorentina has to be enjoyed here in Florence. Made from the white Chianina cow, one of the oldest cattle breeds in the world, this steak has been enjoyed here for centuries. A dish usually prepared to share, it’s the perfect dinner for falling in love with Florence. In the evening stroll the city or enjoy a cocktail from one of Florence’s many rooftop bars.

Overnight at Grand Hotel Minerva

Day 7 - Cinque Terre

This morning you’ll be taking a trip to explore the five seaside villages along the rugged Italian Riviera coast; Cinque Terre. Explore this colorful fairytale-like destination by train or on foot. Linking the villages of Riomaggiore and Manorola, you will find the pedestrian path of "Via dell'Amore" aka Lovers Lane. This is the most famous and romantic stretch of the Cinque Terre coast line. Soak up the spectacular views of the jagged cliffs, lush vineyards and the sea. Cinque Terre is also the perfect place to experience some of Italy’s finer seafood dishes at a seafront restaurant. Once back in Florence you have time to yourself to relax or continue exploring the city at your own pace.

Overnight at Grand Hotel Minerva

Day 8 - Tuscany and Truffles

Today you will be having the 5 star experience with a private driver, exploring vineyards and truffle hunting. You will be picked up from your hotel in the morning and brought out to the rolling hills of Tuscany. Your professional guide and his hunting dogs will take you in search of truffles throughout the oak forests. You will be taught how to identify the various species of trees and the ideal habitat for truffle growth. After your truffle hunting has concluded, indulge in a traditional Tuscan lunch with a wine tasting right within the vine rows with your sweetheart. A stop in San Gimignano is next on the itinerary. San Gimignano is known for its towers and having one of the best gelato shops in the world. Make sure to get a taste before heading back to Florence.

Overnight at Grand Hotel Minerva

Day 9 - Florence to Rome

This morning you will board the train to Rome. Total travel time is just over an hour and a half, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the views that pass by your window. You’ll be doing an evening food tour so spend the afternoon getting to know the city before your tour starts. This twilight food tour takes you into the neighborhood of Testaccio where Roman cuisine was born. Testaccio is not only home to the famous quinto quarto (offal) that Rome is renowned for; it’s also the place where you’ll get away from the tourist crowds and get a glimpse of true Roman daily life. Push the boundaries beyond pizza and pasta and learn the fascinating history of the Romans.

Overnight at The Independent Hotel

Day 10 - Explore Rome

Today is a free day to explore the capital of Italy. With so many sites to see it is advisable to enroll in a tour to see as much as possible (let us know - we can set this up!). You may wish to explore the Colosseum and visit The Pope in the Vatican. Make a wish in the Trevi Fountain and sit on the Spanish Steps. This evening find a restaurant to your liking to try one of Rome’s classic dishes like Cacio e Pepe or Spaghetti Carbonara. We recommend trying a traditional trattoria in the lively neighborhood of Trastevere. Make sure to then end the evening with a sweet treat like gelato.

Overnight at The Independent Hotel

Day 11 - Medieval cooking class

Today you will be leaving the hustle and bustle of the city behind as you head to the countryside to participate in an exclusive cooking class held in the Medieval town of Mazzano Romano. Here, you will have the unique opportunity to learn the secret of the Italian cuisine. Spend the afternoon cooking, eating, enjoying wine and the romantic views from the terrace before heading back to the city. Spend your last evening in Italy doing anything and everything that sets your heart on fire before resting up for your day of travel ahead of you.

Day 12 - Return Home

Today you will be ending your Italian adventure, hopefully a little more full and a little more in love than when you started. We suggest arriving at the airport three hours before an international flight. Have a safe journey home.
