Embark on an unforgettable Icelandic adventure, where wool, nature, and culture come together in perfect harmony. From relaxing soaks in geothermal waters to hands-on knitting workshops, you’ll explore Iceland’s dramatic landscapes, including glaciers, waterfalls, black sand beaches, and volcanic islands. Immerse yourself in local traditions, visiting wool farms, craft studios, and experiencing the vibrant Rettir Festival. Whether you’re discovering Iceland’s rich history, enjoying delicious local dishes, or watching the Northern Lights, this journey promises a unique blend of creativity, relaxation, and exploration.
Welcome to Iceland, the Land of Fire and Ice! The moment you land, you’re whisked away from the airport for a soothing soak at the nearby Sky Lagoon. Take your time here to stretch out, rehydrate, and let the warm waters melt away any travel tension while you enjoy a rejuvenating lunch. Then, hit the road heading “east of the mountain”, a local phrase for the scenic drive from Reykjavík to Iceland’s breathtaking south coast, passing dramatic lava fields, steaming geothermal vents, and wide open grasslands along the way.
Stop in Selfoss to check out local shops, snacks, or even a top-notch brewery. By evening, you’ll settle into your hotel near Hella where you can head straight to bed or join a cozy knitting session with a nightcap or warm tea.
Today’s all about slowing down and diving into Icelandic craft. You’ll spend the day with local textile designer and artisan, Ásdís Birgisdóttir, who’ll guide you through bardaprjón – a traditional Icelandic intarsia knitting technique. Using soft Lopi Light yarn, you’ll learn to create colorful patterns inspired by historic slipper inserts, choosing your own colors and motifs.
After the workshop, you’ll have time to stretch your legs, have a soak or continue working on your project before we depart for dinner at Eldstó, a nearby cafe with great, homestyle fare and an onsite studio full of art and ceramics.
Now that you’re rested and have some hands-on wool work under your belt, it’s time to explore! You’ll take a short drive to the coast, then hop a ferry over to the Vestmannaeyjabær, or Westman Islands. This beautiful archipelago was created by volcanic action. Your adventure kicks off with a fun, easy-to-ride scooter tour around the island (no experience needed!). You’ll stop for lunch, then visit the local museum that tells the dramatic story of the 1973 eruption which, Pompeii-like, caught the local community by surprise. The excavations have revealed an interesting time capsule of island life.
Leave Hella behind and hit the road through some of Iceland’s most dramatic landscapes. You’ll stop at two stunning waterfalls and visit the village of Skógar, right near the Eyjafjallajökull glacier (don’t worry, you’ll learn how to say it!). Then it’s off to Vik’s famous black sand beaches.
In the afternoon, you’ll visit Kidda and Siggi’s farm and studio, where you’ll meet the rare Feldfé or “leader” sheep. Hear why this special breed is gaining attention and browse their beautiful textiles, from blankets to handknit lopapeysas and yarn to sheepskins. You’ll also be treated to fresh Icelandic pancakes with coffee or tea, just like a local guest. In the evening, settle into your next stay in Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
Bundle up — you might need those woolens today! Set off on a full-day adventure to the stunning South Coast. First stop: a boat ride through the magical Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, where icebergs drift in icy blue waters, and one of Iceland’s most breathtaking sights. Lunch comes with a view, at a restaurant perched right above the lagoon. The journey continues through jaw-dropping landscapes as you explore Skaftafell National Park, Skaftafell glacier, the charming Reverend Jón Steingrímsson Chapel, Dverghamrar, and more.
*Some activities may be weather and time permitting.
Heading back toward Hella after breakfast, the journey winds through southern Iceland to a beloved community of wool artisans. Along the way, there’s a stop at the renowned Lava Center for a chance to dive into the fiery forces shaping this incredible island. Just nearby, a charming little shop brims with locally made treasures.
By midafternoon, it’s time to settle into the final accommodation of the tour. Whether it’s soaking in warm waters, knitting with fellow travelers, heading out for an afternoon hike, or simply resting in serenity, this is a time for renewal. In the evening, we’ll be out watching the night sky for a fine display of stars and possibly even the Northern Lights!
Autumn in Iceland means it’s time for one of Iceland’s favorite agricultural events: réttir (roundup). Families gather to saddle up and ride into the highlands, collecting the free-roaming sheep after a summer of grazing. This week-long event is a mix of hard work, community spirit, and celebration. It’s a chance to pitch in with locals and enjoy the festive atmosphere. Plus, the réttir doubles as a lopapeysa fashion show, with handmade sweaters in vibrant colors and patterns taking center stage. After the morning festivities, the afternoon is yours to explore local woolcraft studios and Uppspuni, the country’s first independent spinning mill.
Enjoy a leisurely morning taking in the stunning Icelandic landscape. Take time to pack, knit while you soak up the views, and perhaps share the treasures you’ve collected throughout the week.
In the afternoon, visit the Caves of Hella, an archaeological site on Ægissíða, where ancient artwork and remains offer a glimpse into Iceland’s pre-Nordic history. After a guided tour, indulge in a tasting of local dishes and craft beverages. If time and weather allow, you can explore a bit more before returning for a final celebratory dinner and a cozy evening knitting session to wrap up this incredible journey.
After breakfast, the group drive back to Keflavik Airport for the journey home. You’ll arrive there with plenty of time to check in, check luggage and get through security before departures.
(For all Trans-Atlantic flights, we recommend arriving at the airport 3 hours before departure to ensure a smooth check-in process.)
